Hello everyone,
does anyone know the specific law that states how far you are allowed to cut back trees? (Goal: to trim the tops of fir trees) I would like to "cut back" down to ground level (I have to apply for permission, but it is only allowed from October)...

Check the tree protection regulations of your municipality or city. In my opinion, you can cut down fir trees without a felling permit. Otherwise, there is a felling ban from April 1 to September 30.

Very attentive 🙂
No, the trees are still standing, including those on our own property. Felling is only allowed from October to the end of February and must be applied for even for coniferous trees, as these trees are linked to the building permit. Since the processing time for the felling application is at least 4 weeks, we initially decided against it and will shorten the trees first (because the tree height is greater than the distance from the tree to the house) and then submit the felling application starting in October.
According to the department head, shortening the trees without an application is possible, but I forgot to ask what exactly “shortening” means. The tree protection ordinance doesn’t specify an exact measure but uses bureaucratic phrasing instead...

Tree cutting has only been allowed until the end of February this year. Since spring now arrives much earlier—and so do the animals—the period was changed.

Shorten... if in doubt, reduce by half. What kind of bureaucratic language is in your regulations?

Trimming means “cutting without restrictions” in our case. That’s the frustrating part – if you don’t get a felling permit, you just cut the tree down to 1 meter (3 feet) and it dies on its own 🙁
That makes the whole process pointless (at least that’s how it is where we are).
Don’t forget: If the trees are marked in the development plan and labeled as “worth preserving,” you might not be allowed to trim them at all. Any possibly diseased trees then have to be replanted.
