Hello everyone,

we are just starting the interior finishing. Now we have to take care of the pipe for the laundry chute, as it is not included in the house package. We have received a quote from our plumbing company. The price almost shocked us: 1800 euros. Is that normal? Have you paid that much as well? It includes all materials and installation. But it’s still quite a lot of money.
The pipe is supposed to be 5 meters (16 feet) long with a diameter of 30 cm (12 inches).

Are there any alternatives to the standard PVC pipe?

Consider two things before building something like this yourself:
Do you have children or maybe in 10 years toddlers among your grandchildren in the house who might find the hatch interesting and then fall down three floors? In that case, there are lockable hatches available for the upper levels.
Is the basement heated? If not, cold air can be drawn into the bathroom due to the chimney effect. Therefore, you should already have a sealed laundry bag at the bottom, which can only be opened by a zipper, for example, when removing laundry.

Our hatch is installed at a height of 1.20m (3 ft 11 in) in the hallway, but it cannot be locked. However, no small child would be able to fit inside.

A bag will also be added underneath for soundproofing.

I "thought" that the chimney effect draws warm air upwards, not cold air. I don’t think this is a problem, especially if there is a flap at the top. Besides, a flap or cabinet can easily be replaced with something lockable.

There will also be a bag installed at the bottom – partly for soundproofing.

Our future neighbors have a laundry chute and three little boys, real little rascals. Shortly after moving in, the two older ones tested whether their little brother could fit through the laundry chute:

Result: the little guy fit through...

Luckily, it was only one story and there was a box with lots of laundry at the bottom. So it’s a good idea to always leave some dirty laundry down there.

Best regards,

Andreas

Sure, you can force your way through, but then you might as well lock the kids up all day long.

I designed it so that no toddler can just crawl in on their own. There's a limit to being a helicopter parent after all.

@Sebastian79: Could you please send me a private message with information on where you got the flap and pipe? Thanks
