The weather is expected to turn quite unpleasant, and in some areas, ice rain could actually cause a few power poles to topple. I don’t think this will happen, but just for fun, here’s a question:

How do you prepare for a 48-hour power outage at -5 to -10°C (23 to 14°F)?

It never hurts to think about this kind of situation, even if it’s unlikely.

Not at all, since it’s unnecessary to make special preparations. You surely have warm clothing already…

Increase the heating curve of the heat generator and warm up the screed/floor?

Did you move spontaneously to God’s Own Country? I can’t even remember a power outage longer than half an hour, not even during Storm Kyrill. A reasonably modern house should definitely be able to handle a few hours without electricity. I live in a concrete apartment building from around 1980 (so basically no significant insulation), and a few years ago the heating broke down in the middle of winter. After 2 days, it was a bit colder but still bearable.

If you have one, you can try looking for a camping stove in the basement. At least then you can still have something warm to eat. Otherwise, the usual civil protection recommendations apply regarding stored food and hygiene supplies, which nobody really paid attention to before the coronavirus 😉

Quote from Wikipedia, Münsterland Snow Chaos 2005
Some utility poles could no longer bear the weight of the heavy snow on the lines and snapped. Fallen branches caused power line breaks and short circuits. According to RWE, around 250,000 people in 25 municipalities were affected by the power outage. A disaster alert was declared for the districts of Steinfurt and Borken. Even four days after the snowfall ended, not all locations had been reconnected to the power grid.
