Hello everyone,

I have a small issue. We had a structural opening made between our kitchen and dining room. The engineer specified two IPE240 beams, which were also installed. These were wrapped with expanded metal lath to provide proper adhesion for the plaster. Now there is a discussion between my drywall installer and the plasterer/mason about how to cover the beams.

Option A: Align plaster beads on the beams and fix them with setting compound; after drying, smooth all three sides with finishing compound.

Option B: Attach a 12.5mm (1/2 inch) drywall sheet on the underside using adhesive and make sure it is aligned horizontally and vertically, then support it. After it hardens, smooth the two side flanges with finishing compound.

The mason says Option B is difficult because the drywall sheet can never be cut and aligned perfectly. The drywall installer says that with Option A, the plaster beads cannot be aligned well enough to allow smoothing.

Has anyone had experience with this or knows any pros or cons about these methods?

Best regards,
Mark :-(
