Hello,

We have a fairly good relationship with our neighbor. Now he has revealed that he wants to plant 2–3 fir trees as a privacy screen towards a multi-family house.

He showed us his 3 older fir trees, which, according to him, grew from very small saplings into mature trees within 8 years.

We jokingly replied, please don’t, then the sun will be gone. What are the general rules regarding such trees that can grow very tall and wide? Are there any regulations here that our neighbor must follow? (distance, height, etc.)

I can disprove the idea that nothing grows under fir trees, as almost everything seems to grow under them here. When planting new trees, a certain distance from the property boundary must be observed, but this applies only to neighboring private properties. Public land is exempt from this rule, at least according to our local neighbor law. For coniferous trees, the required distance is usually 4 meters (13 feet).

However, this distance has little impact on the amount of light reaching the property. If the boundary distance is respected, there is nothing to do about the lack of light or the fallen needles.

As far as I can tell, the original poster is also from Hesse, so the same neighbor law should apply. This law is available as a brochure, which includes an appendix listing the minimum required distances for different types of plants.

Hello,

yes, unfortunately it is 4 meters (13 feet), which is not very useful. We are hoping for a good relationship with the neighbor.

Ask him if you can choose one every Christmas 😀

Maybe with a little “encouragement,” he might try something different?
