Good morning, there was a previous discussion here about shrubs with some great suggestions that I have happily taken up.

Would you also like to share which perennials you have had good experiences with, possibly how you combine them, and what didn’t work out so well...

As you can probably guess, I am currently planning the perennials for two beds; preferably perennial plants to reduce maintenance.

One is in full south-facing exposure, with only a bit of morning shade (probably going for something like a cottage garden style), measuring about 4.5 x 1 m (15 x 3 feet). Additionally, I will have a trellis in front of the neighbor’s garage (likely with clematis and climbing roses) about 7 x 1 m (23 x 3 feet), which faces west and is sheltered by a wall but otherwise quite sunny.

So please share your ideas!

We have a copper serviceberry, which I can highly recommend. It is very low-maintenance, hardy in winter, long-lasting, currently blooming beautifully, produces edible berries in summer, and has stunning autumn colors similar to a maple. A wonderful large shrub!

I have seen very different height and width measurements for the copper serviceberry. How tall is your shrub and how old is it?

Best regards,
Sabine

As mentioned, there are different varieties; it doesn't have to be the copper one. A spicata or rotundifolia will reach about 2m (6.5 ft) and can be pruned much more easily.

I know there are smaller varieties too, but I would prefer a shrub or tree around 5m (16.5 feet) tall. However, the copper serviceberry seems to grow significantly taller.

I estimate 5-7 meters (16-23 feet); that was the size of ours at the old house.
Now I have two again because they have many qualities you want in a tree.

Ours is an amelanchier lamarkii, known as the copper serviceberry, in shrub form (it is also available in columnar and other shapes). They typically grow 4–6 meters (13–20 feet) tall and about 5 meters (16 feet) wide. Ours is currently just under 2 meters (6.5 feet) tall. I don’t know its exact age. I bought it a year ago at 1.6 meters (5.2 feet) and planted it in March 2018. However, these details are never really reliable. Depending on the location, it might stay around 3 meters (10 feet) or grow to 7 meters (23 feet). Ask me again in 15 years^^.
