ᐅ Paving stones have settled after one year (carport wheel track rut).

Hello everyone,

After the first winter with our carport, I noticed something. We added a carport last year and had the area paved at the same time. Now there are already noticeable ruts where the car is parked. I would say the paving looks slightly uneven and has settled by about 1cm (0.4 inches) overall.

I don’t like how it looks, and you can feel it when walking on it. Also, water might collect there.

Of course, some settlement is to be expected, as some movement is normal. But how much settlement is considered acceptable, and would you make a complaint to your landscaping contractor about this?

Thank you for your help!

Good luck

The problem often lies much deeper...

For example, if the backfill around the house wasn’t compacted every 40cm (16 inches) but only the top layer was compacted, the ground below will continue to settle.

If this happens only along a narrow strip, I can easily imagine that the subsoil is causing problems because the landscaping contractor did not work on that area.

A good plate compactor usually reaches only about 40cm (16 inches) deep. If it’s really powerful, maybe up to 50cm (20 inches). But not much deeper than that.

Of course, it also depends on how far down the native soil was loosened and compacted again.

And if this only happens in one strip, I can well imagine that the subsoil is causing problems since the landscaper didn’t work on it at all.

A good vibratory plate usually compacts to about 40cm (16 inches) deep. If it’s a high-quality one, maybe 50cm (20 inches). But not much more than that.

Of course, it always depends on how far down the natural soil was loosened and re-compacted.

There is no house where the parking space is. Also, no one except the landscaper did any backfilling there. He can’t pass the blame on to anyone else; he should have compacted it layer by layer. I think roughly 1 meter (3 feet) of mineral gravel was placed there.

Good, if no excavation was done there otherwise, the fault clearly lies with the landscape gardener.

Of course, it saves a lot of time if the area is compacted only once instead of, as it should be, 2-3 times to a depth of 1 meter (3.3 feet).

With this depth, I would compact at least twice.
We compacted around the house in 30cm (12 inch) layers to avoid this problem.

Hello

Use a tamper. That way, nothing will settle anymore.
