The house is positioned “sideways” on the plot, following the shape of the lot. This means the front and back have equal distances to the neighbors. The pitched roof is oriented towards the neighbors, so the gable faces the street and the orchard meadow.
I recently had a discussion with the plumbing company regarding the solar panel orientation. I always thought that solar panels should be oriented either south or west. Our roof has an east (with some south) and west (with some north) orientation. Therefore, I assumed our solar panels would be installed on the west side of the roof. Looking at the “older” new development area, the houses with a similar stronger west-east orientation also have their panels on the west side.
However, our plumber tends to recommend an east-facing orientation, arguing that during the months when solar panels deliver noticeable performance, the hot water tank already reaches 60°C (140°F) by midday and then shuts off anyway. He will consult again with Buderus to get their expert opinion.
What are your thoughts on this?
Hello
I usually choose the west side.
During the winter months, there are often layers of fog in the morning.
In the summer months, the warmed domestic hot water can be used in the afternoon for the washing machine and dishwasher, and the tank is further heated by solar radiation.

Our house is oriented exactly north/south, and our panels are installed on both the east and west sides, with the larger portion on the WEST side.
Since we both work full time, we mostly need electricity in the afternoon and evening (even though it is still light outside in the summer!).
Appliances with timers (washing machine, dryer, dishwasher) usually run one after another starting around 12 or 1 p.m., so everything is done by the time we get home :-).

You don’t mean photovoltaic panels for electricity, but solar collectors for hot water, right?
Our collectors face east. Since we have no point of comparison, we had to rely on what the architect/plumber recommended.
We are satisfied – the hot water is stored.
The apartment buildings here also have an east-facing orientation.

Okay, then it seems that west-facing might be the slightly better choice, but east-facing isn’t a bad option either.
