Hello everyone!
We are building with architects and contracting trades separately, and we are currently preparing the tender for the tile installation.
After a long search, we found tiles that we like. It was quite difficult since we are not really enthusiastic about tiles. Now we are very glad to have found something suitable, but not all types are available from a single supplier.
Ideally, I would like to procure all the tiles myself so that the tiler doesn’t have to start looking for any “exotic tiles” somewhere.
What are your experiences with client-supplied materials like these? Do tilers appreciate it because they might not be able to get these special tiles everywhere, or do they generally prefer to supply the tiles themselves in order to make some additional profit on them?

The "problem" with tiles is the logistics. Suddenly, 2-3 tons or more get delivered right to your doorstep. Who moves them inside? Make sure to arrange that in advance 🙂Alex, we carried them ourselves into the building. Pack by pack through the window.

The quantity is actually not an issue in our case, but thanks for the heads-up 😉
The areas are really not very large, so it all stays manageable. I just have to get the husband to understand that he has to carry them all inside 😀
But you can definitely tell that many of the tile installers don’t seem to have a problem with it. With our first build 12 years ago, it was a bit different. The tile installers back then also preferred to sell the tiles themselves. However, those were installers who had their own tile showroom.

In short, this is how it went for us. Tiles had to be chosen from x, y, or z. The tile price was $25 per m² (approximately $2.32 per ft²). We then selected from one of the three. The tiler placed the order since he knew exactly how many square meters he needed. The discounts he received from x, y, and z were passed on to us at half the value, so we were actually able to pay up to $27 per m² (approximately $2.51 per ft²).

toxicmolotof31 Dec 2017 16:24I had asked beforehand, and he said it wouldn’t be a problem; I just needed to arrange the logistics and ensure the materials arrived on time. For the sake of completeness, he did mention that he couldn’t be responsible for the quality of the materials I provided myself and wouldn’t guarantee the grout widths if the tiles weren’t rectified, but that was basically it.
In the end, the work was excellent – he even managed to use the floor tiles on the walls.
With over 100 square meters (1,076 square feet) and a price difference of 15 euros per square meter (about 1.40 USD per square foot), it’s an easy decision to buy locally.
But carrying more than 100 packages definitely works the muscles.

Hello,
We also contracted the tiler separately and bought the tiles ourselves, as it seems we have a rather "difficult" taste 😉
It went smoothly, but carrying them inside is up to you; alternatively, money can solve it ^^ the tilers would also carry them inside for a fee.
Best regards, Tina
