Hello everyone,
our renovation has started, and now we are working on many details...

Among other things, as part of the renovation and extension, a section will be supported by steel columns, and a steel balcony will be added.
The metal fabricator has now asked us whether we want all the metal parts to be just hot-dip galvanized or powder coated.
To be honest, I have always assumed hot-dip galvanizing by default and never considered anything else.

Apart from the additional costs (the powder-coated parts are also galvanized first), does anyone have experience with this?
I have heard/read that the coating can flake or crack relatively quickly.
Are there any other recommendations regarding this?

Visually, a powder coating would definitely look very appealing...

Best regards,
Christian

Hot-dip galvanizing as corrosion protection is state of the art and effective. Powder coating is good for the appearance if you want green, blue, red, or something completely different. Our fence should be green, so it is powder coated on galvanized steel, which prevents chipping.

We used powder coating. Everything is perfect.

I wouldn’t use powder coating alone.
Only hot-dip galvanized if the appearance is not important.
Powder coating over hot-dip galvanized if you have the budget and care a lot about the look. Theoretically, there is also anodizing (for steel, bluing / for stainless steel, black oxide), but that is probably too expensive for most people.
