Hello everyone,

I have a small problem with my IKEA Malm sideboard: the drawer slides are damaged on one of the drawers. Because of this, the drawer no longer slides smoothly, and I want to replace them. Can someone explain exactly how to properly remove the drawer slides on a Malm sideboard and replace them with suitable spare parts? A step-by-step guide would be best, as I am reasonably handy, but furniture drawer slides are often unclear to me—especially what to watch out for during installation to ensure the drawer runs smoothly without sticking or wobbling.

I would also like to know if it is necessary to buy original IKEA replacement parts or if compatible options from third-party suppliers are advisable.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hey arnelu,

great that you feel confident tackling this yourself!

Replacing the drawer slides on a Malm dresser isn’t as difficult as it seems. I did it some time ago, and with a bit of patience, it’s quite straightforward.

You’ll see, once you have removed the old runners, installing the new ones is really satisfying! The drawer will then run smoothly like new again!

Good luck, and if you have any questions, just ask here! ;-)

When reinstalling, gently open and close the drawer several times before fully tightening the screws.

Good tip, thanks!

I’m planning to get a suitable bit set and replace the slide over two days: first completely uninstall and reinstall it, then loosen the screws again for fine adjustment.

If anyone has any tips, for example on the most affordable source for original parts, please share!
