Hello,

we are still at the very beginning of our planning. We have done some research online about log houses and Swedish-style houses. We have also already visited the standard prefab home suppliers in the model home park.

So far, we have not made a decision, but we are definitely leaning towards either a log house or a Swedish-style house. Personally, I prefer the Swedish-style house, but my husband prefers the log house.

It seems that there are quite a few companies, some of which produce partially in Eastern Europe. We have read that the types of wood used there are sometimes not of the best quality (although there are certainly companies among them that use high-quality wood).

For us, it is relatively difficult to distinguish which suppliers are reliable.

As for us, we are not craftsmen. We have already done some tasks like laying parquet flooring, installing doors, plastering, and insulating. We would like to contribute these as self-performed work. The assembly of the house should therefore be carried out by the construction company. We do not feel confident doing that ourselves. We plan to use the property as our permanent primary residence.

I look forward to your replies.

Thank you.

We have had a very positive experience with our log house builder from Germany.

If you want to know more, feel free to get in touch.

Best regards

Many companies manufacture in Eastern Europe. They use locally sourced spruce wood. The boards are very thin and better suited for summer houses. The wood quality is not as high as the close-grained pine found near the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia and Finland. For example, in Finland, Kuusamo Log House produces log house kits near the Arctic Circle using only dense-grained pine timber with beam thicknesses up to 275 mm (11 inches).

There are also providers in Germany who advertise using Scots pine for their products... Talis comes to mind, for example.

Guys, just look at the latitudes where Germany is located. Even considering the transport distance alone, the ecological footprint of Siberian pine is a serious issue by any environmental standard before the material even arrives here. Blessed be the hypocrisy, forever and ever, amen.

Just take a walk—instead of the supposedly purple cows—in a real forest and observe the vast amounts of windthrow. Using solid timber construction should be the absolute last choice from a forestry perspective. Wood technology should be recognized as the high-tech field it is and has produced excellent engineered wood products over the past decades, making wood an ecologically sensible material for building use. It doesn’t always have to be steak tartare.
