Hello everyone,

I am currently building a wooden patio roof. I would like to install LED spotlights for lighting. The idea is to drill holes into the rafters (8x20 cm (3x8 inches) - span 4 m (13 ft)) with a diameter of 32 mm (1.25 inches) and about 40 mm (1.5 inches) deep to install recessed spotlights. This will weaken the rafters to some extent. Is this a common practice, or is it not recommended to drill such large holes into the rafters? Has anyone done something like this before?

I wouldn’t worry about that. You still have 160mm (6.3 inches) of thickness left after drilling. This still corresponds to snow load zone 3. Therefore...

Thank you! We are located in snow load zone 1, so that should be sufficient. Especially since the weakening does not affect the entire width. On the left and right sides of the drilling, I still have the full rafter thickness available.

Is there a publicly accessible table or similar resource where you can look up rafter thicknesses based on length and/or snow load zone?
