Hello everyone, I am currently working on making our IKEA Besta shelving unit more child-friendly, as our little ones have started climbing on the furniture and I want to minimize potential hazards. My specific question is: Are there any clear and practical guides or proven methods for modifying a Besta unit to make it more stable, secure, and child-safe—such as using special fasteners, child-friendly handles, or padding on corners and edges? I am also interested in tips on whether certain additional materials are needed and how to make doors or drawers safer without having to replace the entire furniture. Thanks in advance for your help!

As an additional note: If you want to be on the safe side, you should also check the stability of the shelves. Besta modules are generally designed for loads up to 25 kg (55 lbs), but children climbing on them can quickly exceed this limit. Reinforcement panels or extra screws in the corners increase rigidity and can help prevent accidents.

Furthermore, I recommend installing child safety locks, which are available at baby specialty stores and provide a simple solution to prevent unauthorized opening. These are easy to install and sturdy enough to withstand curious little fingers.

Wow, what a great discussion here! 😊 I really appreciate how thoroughly you’re addressing this topic, especially since safety in children’s rooms should not be underestimated. One important point I’d like to add: if possible, you might consider closing off the lower shelves with plexiglass or acrylic panels. This way, the storage space remains usable, while the items inside are protected, and children are less likely to crawl in or pull things out.

Also, for the edges, there are special self-adhesive edge protectors that are very durable and easy to remove when the kids are older. Wishing everyone the best for a safe and cozy home! 😄
