ᐅ Is it normal for a single basement room to smell like chlorine?

TobesterHello,
My wife and I are new homeowners. We have moved into an existing property built in 1993.
We have noticed a chlorine-like smell in one basement room. The source seems to be the floor drain grate; I have attached a photo. The smell is limited to this room and does not appear to spread further.
My question is whether this is normal. Why might this smell occur, and what could be the cause? Who should I contact if necessary?

If it’s a floor drain, I would first take a look there out of curiosity. Often, when floor drains start to smell musty, simply pouring water down regularly can help. Maybe adding baking powder or baking soda might help too—just search online for "drain smells" or similar; this usually comes from the decomposition of organic material in the wastewater system. Sometimes just pouring 1-2 buckets of water down every now and then is enough—we had the same issue in our old house. I’m not familiar with a chlorine smell, but perhaps the cause and the solution are the same here; it’s worth a try.
