Hello everyone,
I have had a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA in my living room for some time now, and I noticed that dust keeps entering the interior through the back panel. Especially on the back side, the board doesn’t seem to be dustproof, which is frustrating because I often store decorations and delicate items there. My question is: Is there a way to prevent dust from entering through the thin back panel of the KALLAX unit? Are there any proven methods, materials, or techniques to effectively block or at least significantly reduce dust ingress without negatively affecting the stability or appearance of the shelf? I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences!

install an additional reinforcing panel made of MDF or plywood with a thickness of 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 inches)That’s really sturdy! 🙂 For those who like DIY projects but don’t want to change the look too much: I painted the MDF panel thinly in black and installed it inside – looks good and no more dust!
One small tip: For felt or fabric edges on the back side, you can avoid small dust-collecting edges. Instead of felt, simply use thin silicone strips—they last longer and don’t attract dust as much.

foil between wall and shelf I understand this as advice if you don’t want to make the back side too complicated to modify. Consider a removable clear protective film, so you can change it depending on the season.
