Hello, we are planning to insulate the facade of our mid-terrace house.
Our house is built with 34cm (13 inch) masonry (hollow bricks).
Now I wanted to ask how much insulation makes sense, or if a full external thermal insulation system is even an option?! We heat with a stove that is built with fireclay bricks. It provides great warmth, and before going to bed, we add more fuel because we don’t want the heating to run through the night. At around -5°C (23°F) outside temperature, we experience a temperature drop of about 5°C (9°F) indoors in the living room and kitchen, even though the doors are closed. In the evening (10 PM) it’s 24°C (75°F), and in the morning (6 AM) only 19°C (66°F). That feels like a lot, considering the stove keeps radiating heat for a long time due to the fireclay bricks.
I would appreciate some advice :-)
Best regards, Chris

This question cannot be answered reliably without specific data or figures. In a mid-terrace house, savings are likely to be limited since, apart from the roof and windows, only the gable walls are exposed to the outside air. I would recommend having the calculations done beforehand to assess whether the effort is worthwhile.

So, does that mean getting an energy consultant to take a look? How much does that usually cost?
