Hello,
has anyone here hired a building inspector or expert solely for the final inspection?
We have heard different opinions from various sources. Currently, our relationship with the general contractor is good, and so far, everything seems to be going well from our point of view. The schedule has worked out perfectly, we like what we have seen, and what we can assess as non-experts appears to be fine.
However, we are still laypersons. Would you definitely recommend having an expert present for the final inspection, or is it okay to do without one?

We deliberately decided against it. He won’t find any major mistakes anyway. Almost all other issues are usually just cosmetic defects. I can see those myself.
It is important to measure all walls, windows, etc. very accurately again.
I would save myself the few hundred euros.

You will find very different opinions on this topic here; there is also a very detailed thread about it in this forum:

We have chosen an inspector who will accompany our new build over 5-6 appointments (including the final acceptance). Personally, I would recommend hiring one, even if it is just for the final inspection. Like you, I am not an expert and do not want to have issues with the construction company after handover and moving in because certain things were simply overlooked. It is the last chance to document some defects before moving in, even if they might no longer be repairable.

Thank you very much for the links. I usually use the search function, but I have not been very successful with it so far.

I am one of those experts, and from my experience, I can only say: do it! I can speak for myself—I charge by the hour, it’s affordable, and often a big help! Hire a colleague, and you’ll be glad you did!

I would never do it without one... it doesn’t cost that much, and if you have no experience yourself, in my opinion, it’s best to have someone review the important points... but 100 others manage without one as well... it can work, but it doesn’t have to.
