Hello everyone,

We share 5 garages with our neighbors, which have a sort of attic space, but we can't access it because the roof was constructed on top of the prefabricated garages.
We would like to use the space above the garage as a storage room and are looking for a way to build some kind of hatch or similar from the garage ceiling.
Is this something that can be done easily, or are there specific considerations we need to keep in mind?

From a structural standpoint, this is not a problem. Prefabricated ceilings in garages usually contain more steel reinforcement than concrete. The only challenging part will be cutting out the hatch, but it should still be possible to finish on a Saturday. If possible, the opening should be cut from above to prevent debris from falling on your head.

Simply remove a few roof tiles and crawl through the rafters.
Make an opening of 70 x 140 cm (28 x 55 inches), so you can install a proper attic ladder (folding staircase).
