Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I inherited a house that I now want to renovate and rent out. The house is in relatively good condition, but there is one room upstairs that concerns me. By the way, it is an old half-timbered house. In the basement, the ceilings have already been raised by a few centimeters (inches) and covered with panels. However, as I mentioned, upstairs I fear that if I were to remove the wallpaper from the ceiling (because I believe the wallpaper is the only thing preventing the ceiling from collapsing), a mixture of clay and straw will fall down. Nonetheless, something needs to be done to the ceiling, and I would also like to raise it. But how and with what should I start?

If the house is very old, it is not guaranteed that you are allowed to make any changes, as it might be a listed building. In that case, you can only make alterations if you have prior approval from the authorities. The advantage is that you may also be eligible for financial support.

Hello,
a friend of mine also has an old house like that, and he restored it really well with the help of the heritage conservation office. There was a grant available, and he was assigned an expert who made the whole process easier for him. Try reaching out to them!

With an older house, this is a delicate matter. I would immediately contact either a construction company or a specialist. To tinker around on your own would honestly be too risky for me.

Uh oh... Raising the ceiling is always incredibly complicated. It is definitely best to consult an expert beforehand who can take a closer look.
