Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA BESTÅ shelving unit and would like to install additional shelves to make better use of the storage space. The original shelves are usually fixed or have limited positioning options, and I haven’t found clear instructions on how to add more shelves myself.

My question is: How can I safely and properly install extra shelves in a BESTÅ unit without compromising its stability or appearance? What materials, brackets, or fasteners are recommended, and are there any important considerations, for example regarding load capacity or installation procedure?

I appreciate any tips and experiences you can share, including advice on tools and methods. Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone!

I recently added extra shelves to my BESTÅ shelving unit, and I have to say, it’s working great! 🙂

What I definitely recommend:
- Buy the original IKEA shelf supports, as they’re really easy to insert.
- Pay close attention to the exact positioning: I used a spirit level to make sure the shelf is perfectly horizontal.
- I was also unsure about the stability at first, but so far no problems at all.

I think it’s really neat how you can customize the SYSTEM so easily! So, grab your screws and get started, it’ll definitely work! 👍

Avoid drilling additional holes in the side walls yourself, as this can weaken the material.

That’s correct; unnecessarily enlarging holes is not advisable. It’s better to use the original holes or install a replacement bracket.
