Hello everyone, I recently purchased the IKEA Besta furniture system and am now considering how to make it childproof. Specifically, I want to prevent the doors and drawers of my Besta unit from being easily opened by small children, as some sensitive items are stored inside. Are there proven methods to securely lock this type of furniture without causing permanent damage? Perhaps someone knows practical child safety locks or general tips for this kind of shelving system. I am also open to suggestions for solutions that are easy to install and remove later. Thanks in advance!
As a supplement to the suggestions mentioned, I also consider the use of soft-close hinges to be useful. These prevent doors from slamming shut, which not only improves child safety but also protects the furniture longer. Combined with magnetic catches or compression latches, this creates an effective safety system that also maintains ease of use.

The simplest option is magnetic child safety locks that you can stick on the inside of the doors.Magnetic locks are convenient, but I think that might be a bit too simplistic. What if you don’t have the magnetic opener handy?

Drilling should be avoided to preserve the look of the furniture. That’s a luxury concern, isn’t it? When it comes to child safety, I believe we shouldn’t hesitate over small drill holes. Stability and safety are more important. Sure, aesthetics are nice, but not if safety is compromised. Securing the furniture should be primarily functional.
