Hello everyone,
I own an Ikea Besta shelving unit and would like to add extra shelves to make the storage space more flexible. My specific question is: How can additional shelves be installed in an Ikea Besta unit? What materials and fixing methods are best suited for this, and are there any particular technical or safety considerations to keep in mind? I have already located the standard holes for the shelves but am unsure whether it is possible to drill multiple new holes there or if there are better alternatives.
I would appreciate it if someone could share their experience or tips on how to safely and neatly install additional shelves.

So why start drilling into the sides yourself on an Ikea product—a furniture manufacturer that designed its shelving to be modular—and take on unnecessary risks? To me, it often seems more like “Can I try something out with my tools?” rather than a genuine need for enhanced functionality.
The original system is designed exactly so you can add and swap shelves according to your needs and budget. Of course, you can tinker with cheap brackets from DIY stores, but they usually don’t hold up in the long run. So why not just stick with the original parts and adapt the storage space instead of “modifying” it?
