Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy shelf unit from IKEA and want to secure the shelves as firmly and safely as possible. However, I have doubts whether the usual supplied metal pins or plastic dowels are really stable enough for the long term, especially if the shelves will bear heavier loads.

My question is: How can Billy shelves be fixed securely so that they neither wobble nor give way under load? Are there specific techniques, reinforcements, or alternative fastening methods that are recommended?

I appreciate well-informed tips, as I am not only interested in a quick assembly but in a durable and stable solution. Thanks in advance for your help!

Has long-term experience been gained?

Yes, I can confirm that the simple metal bracket method provides a very solid result. Small stainless steel brackets are used for this, which are screwed from underneath onto the shelf panel and then attached to the shelf frame.

Doubling up the shelves with additional battens under the panel

The effect is the same if the doubling up is done so that it is screwed to the shelf frame. This significantly improves the load capacity without affecting the visible area.

Additionally, thicker shelves (e.g., plywood or solid wood) also help to make the shelf more stable if the budget and design allow.
