Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of mounting an Ikea Pax wardrobe on a drywall (plasterboard) wall and want to make sure the setup is safe and stable in the long term. Since Pax wardrobes can be quite heavy, especially when fully loaded, I’m wondering what the best approach is for drywall walls – which fastening methods are recommended? Is it sufficient to use standard anchors, or is it necessary to use special cavity anchors or even reinforce the wall additionally? Has anyone had concrete experience with this or maybe step-by-step guidance on how to best do it technically, considering load-bearing capacity and safety? I would appreciate any practical tips, recommendations, or warnings about common mistakes.

If that’s not possible, special cavity anchors, so-called “toggle bolts” or “Molly bolts,” are the minimum requirement. This is basically true, but I think it is often presented as a cure-all without considering the exact material properties and the age of the drywall. Especially older drywall panels can become brittle or crumbly due to moisture or age – in such cases, even theoretically good anchors do not perform well.
I would primarily recommend testing the wall quality (for example, with a drill in an inconspicuous spot) before investing in expensive mounting hardware. Also, drywall panels can have different load capacities depending on the manufacturer and type. It is important to differentiate which exact product has been installed.
Therefore, I advocate for an analytical approach: first inspect, then plan, and finally choose the appropriate fasteners. Only this way will the mounting be reliably secure in the long term.
