Hello everyone,

I am planning to mount several IKEA Metod wall cabinets on a drywall surface in my apartment. I understand that this is more challenging than mounting on a solid wall due to the nature of the surface. My question is: How can I safely and securely install IKEA Metod wall cabinets on drywall without the screws pulling out or causing damage to the wall?

I am looking for a long-lasting solution that can reliably support the weight of the cabinets including their contents. The cabinets weigh between 20 and 30 kg (44 and 66 lbs) depending on the size, plus dishes and other items.

What mounting materials are best suited for this (e.g., special anchors or plugs)? Do I absolutely have to fix the screws into the wooden or metal studs behind the drywall, or are there alternative methods?

I would appreciate any advice on preparation, choice of materials, and the proper process for drilling and fastening.

Thank you in advance!

Summary and Best Practices for the Safe Installation of Metod Wall Cabinets on Drywall:

- Locating wall studs with a high-quality stud finder is essential.
- For wooden studs: use appropriate wood screws to secure the cabinet to the studs.
- For metal studs: use self-tapping sheet metal screws suitable for metal framing.
- Where no studs are available, always use tested metal toggle anchors that open behind the wall and are rated for higher loads.
- Alternatively, heavy-duty drywall anchors, such as toggle bolts, can be used.
- Avoid using simple expansion anchors with low load capacity, as these often cause issues.
- After installation, check the anchorage before loading the cabinets.

Tip: If possible, reinforce the system by attaching a horizontal wooden batten to the studs to distribute the load. This allows a larger area to act as the load-bearing surface.

In short:

- Attach the wall cabinets directly to the studs.
- Use toggle bolts only if you cannot reach the studs.
- Reinforce the wall with wooden battens if in doubt.
- Check the load capacity of the anchors used.

Anything else is a risk.

How wide is the wall, and is the material wood stud or metal stud? This information helps to recommend the best fastening technique.

Good question! Simonla, could you please add that information? This way, we can provide precise advice to ensure the cabinets are securely mounted. 😉

Personally, if it’s metal studs, I would even opt for stronger anchors, even if it requires more effort. Safety comes first!

Looking forward to your response!
