Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Malm chest of drawers and want to secure it safely to my hardwood floor to prevent it from tipping over or sliding. Since the Malm chest is quite tall and narrow, I am a bit concerned about its stability, especially in a household with children. My question is: What methods and materials are best suited to securely, permanently, and floor-protectively fix a Malm chest of drawers to hardwood flooring? Ideally, the solution should not damage the floor, be easy to install, and still reliably prevent slipping or tipping over. I would appreciate any tips on fastening materials, procedures, or personal experiences!

A Malm dresser is really not that tall to simply tip over during normal use.\\

There is basically nothing against that, as long as the user handles the situation responsibly and doesn’t use the dresser as a climbing frame.

However, the issue here is the tipping direction: a Malm is relatively narrow, so the tipping lever moves easily. Tipping can be caused by weight in the upper drawers, careless handling, or even slight impacts.

As long as you have some anti-slip pads and position the dresser properly, that’s completely sufficient.\\

That is only partly true because the pads mainly prevent sliding, but not tipping. Especially families with children should not skip wall anchoring as a safety measure, especially since anti-tip devices can be retrofitted with little effort.

If the goal is to create a permanent and safe solution, I highly recommend the combined approach: floor protection plus wall anchoring.

What do you think about this, Tafinn? Are you more interested in a pragmatic solution or the safest possible one?
