Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea Metod kitchen countertop that unfortunately has damage in several areas. Most of it consists of superficial scratches, but there are also small dents and spots where the surface appears slightly swollen, probably due to moisture. Since the countertop is made of a plastic-coated wood composite material, I am unsure how to best repair these damages without having to replace the entire countertop.

Has anyone had experience repairing these Metod countertops? What materials and tools are suitable for removing scratches or treating swollen areas? What is the best approach to achieve a clean result without causing further damage to the coating?

I would appreciate as many detailed tips and advice as possible, including preparation, handling the damages, and any replacement materials or special repair kits.

Thank you in advance!

A question for desmond61: What tools and materials do you currently have available? Are you skilled with DIY tasks, and do you have access to fine sandpaper as well as sealants?

Thank you for your detailed posts!

I have common tools like fine sandpaper (including 800 grit), brushes, and some varnishes at home, but no special repair kits for laminate or plastics. I’m reasonably handy, but I don’t want to take any risks that might make the surface look worse in the end.

The damaged areas include scratches about 2–3 cm (1–1¼ inches) long, small dents roughly 1 to 2 cm (0.4–0.8 inches) in diameter, and two slightly swollen spots along the edge, each about 1 cm (0.4 inches) wide.

I like your recommendation to clean with isopropanol; I should be able to get that.

Is there a precise step-by-step guide on how to best prepare the moisture-affected areas before sealing? Are there specific products you would recommend for sealing the edges that are both waterproof and abrasion-resistant?
