Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Ikea Metod base cabinets, but I’m facing the challenge of not using the available storage space optimally. The cabinets are quite flexible in terms of interior configuration, but I’m wondering how to make the best use of the space to store both bulky and small kitchen utensils efficiently.

I’m especially interested in experiences or tips regarding storage systems, drawer or basket divisions, partitions, possible inserts, and adjustable options.

How do you organize your Metod base cabinets to maximize the available space without compromising accessibility? Are there proven solutions or accessories that have worked particularly well?

I look forward to your ideas and suggestions!

Hello everyone,

I would like to add my experience, as I also struggled for a long time with optimizing storage in Ikea Metod kitchens.

The important first step before furnishing is to take stock: What kitchen utensils do you have, and how often do you use them?

Here are my three main recommendations:

- Buy drawer inserts only as large as necessary – too many small compartments break up the space too much.
- For deeper base cabinets: pull-out baskets or full-extension drawers provide better access to the back area.
- Use flexible dividers or adjustable boxes to organize vertical space. For bulky items, a removable box works well so you don’t have to empty everything.

This improved my available space by about 30% compared to before.

If anyone needs an overview or a chart of the interior dimensions, I’m happy to help.

I’m curious about how you have organized your cabinets so far and if you have any items that are particularly difficult to store?

Thanks for the questions!

So far, I have mostly installed standard drawers along with a few pull-out wire baskets, but overall these have been somewhat inefficient for my larger cookware as well as small tools.

The biggest challenge is tall pots and pans, which often lie sideways and leave little space for other items. Small loose items like sealing clips for packaging and small kitchen gadgets usually end up scattered in the cabinet because I haven’t found suitable inserts for them.

I also find the idea of organizing storage according to frequency of use interesting; until now, I had only been vaguely aware of it. Is this a practical approach in your daily routines or more of a theory?

Maybe someone has a tip on how to store clip containers and other small items securely and clearly without reducing space for larger items.
