Hello everyone,
I am planning to modify some of my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets to make them more child-friendly and am looking for expert advice on this. My main goal is to design the cabinets so that they are safe for children, meaning no sharp edges, doors and drawers don’t slam shut unexpectedly, and hard-to-reach areas are either secured or childproofed.
I am particularly interested in practical tips for installing soft-close mechanisms to reduce the risk of finger injuries, as well as options for integrating locks into a Metod cabinet system to prevent young children from accessing hazardous contents without supervision.
Does anyone have experience with additional safety devices or structural modifications to Metod cabinets that go beyond the standard features? Which products work well, and what should I definitely pay attention to? I would also appreciate advice on materials that are easy to clean, since hygiene is naturally very important with small children.
I look forward to a knowledgeable and practical exchange of experiences!

Soft-close systems effectively reduce the risk of injuries caused by doors and drawers suddenly closing.I definitely agree with that. At first, I was hesitant to redo everything, but after installing the soft-close system, the difference is huge.

Wall mounting should always be done using the installation materials recommended by the manufacturer; not just anchors but also metal brackets and screw anchors—especially in older buildings. That’s exactly what I once skipped because I thought, "it won’t tip over." It could have become very costly and dangerous if a child climbed on it.
Another experience: The magnetic locks can be quite strong. We reluctantly left some drawers unlocked because the opening resistance was sometimes too much for the little ones. Simple latches are sometimes better for very young children.
I also find regular maintenance of the mechanisms very important. This is often underestimated!
