Hello everyone, I have several Billy shelves from Ikea at home that have unfortunately become stained with stubborn grease due to occasional kitchen use. Despite repeated regular cleaning, sticky, greasy residues remain, especially on the edges and shelves. My specific question is: How can I effectively clean my Billy shelves from stubborn grease without damaging or wearing down the surface? Are there any proven home remedies or suitable cleaning agents specifically for the melamine resin coating? I would appreciate any tips, as I want to avoid unnecessarily damaging the material.

A safer alternative is diluted isopropyl alcohol (70%), which evaporates quickly and effectively removes grease without damaging the coating.I can confirm that. Isopropyl alcohol works well, especially for stubborn greasy stains. However, you should only use it on a soft cloth and not spray it directly onto the shelf to ensure even distribution.
As mentioned before, do not let it soak in; instead, allow it to dry thoroughly.
Additionally, you could use a microfiber cloth for polishing after cleaning to avoid any streaks.
Good luck!

Are there any practical experiences on how long the cleaner should be left to act, or is it better to wipe it off immediately?I would recommend keeping the contact time as short as possible. Especially with melamine surfaces, leaving the cleaner on too long can soften or damage the protective layer.
Allow the cleaning agent to act for no more than 5 minutes, if at all. Afterwards, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and then dry immediately.
Also: avoid using abrasive sponges or scouring pads, as they can cause scratches that trap greasy residues more easily.
Regular, gentle cleaning prevents grease from hardening and makes maintenance easier overall.

This works especially well for tiny irregularities or spots where the grease has already hardened.
Of course, apply only light pressure to avoid damaging the surface.
