Hello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble some Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and want to make them as easy to maintain and durable as possible. The question I have is: how can I optimize the construction of the cabinets to facilitate future maintenance and repairs, and to maximize the furniture’s lifespan? Specifically, I am interested in advice regarding proper fastening, the use of additional materials, or preventive measures against wear and tear. I would appreciate any experiences, tips, and tricks that go beyond the standard assembly instructions.

It is also helpful to occasionally oil the hinges and ensure that no excessive loads from heavy weights are placed on individual drawers or doors.

That’s a useful tip, thank you! Are there any recommendations regarding the type of lubricant to use? Sometimes I worry that WD-40 or silicone spray might be too aggressive or attract dirt. Additionally, I am wondering if certain types of doors or drawer designs are better suited when durability is the main focus.

For the choice of lubricant, I recommend a light, dry lubricant, ideally graphite- or PTFE-based. These do not leave a sticky residue and keep hinges and tracks free from dust. Regarding the drawers: Metod often uses fully extendable runners – it is worth choosing high-quality versions with a soft-close feature. Such systems are not only more comfortable but also protect the mechanics due to the gentle movement, thereby increasing their lifespan.

Another point is the choice of screws. Ikea recommends the usual chipboard screws in the instructions. I have had good experiences using slightly thicker wood screws and sometimes add metal brackets or additional reinforcements in areas subject to higher stress. This way, loosening under heavy load is unlikely.

Don’t forget: During assembly, it is advisable to clean all moving parts with a soft cloth to remove any manufacturing residues before installation. It also helps to distribute heavy loads evenly and avoid permanent overloading. This reduces stress on individual components and ensures everything remains stable for longer.
