Hello everyone, I have a question regarding the Ikea Hemnes furniture series: What is the best way to protect Hemnes furniture from possible moisture damage? Especially in rooms with higher humidity, such as kitchens or bathrooms, I am concerned that moisture could settle into the wooden surfaces and joints, potentially causing long-term damage or mold growth. I am looking for specific recommendations on how to proceed—such as using appropriate varnishes, oils, sealants, or even construction-related measures to reduce moisture exposure. I am also interested in whether certain cleaning or maintenance methods should be avoided because they might damage the wood. I would appreciate any helpful tips and experiences.

The question about combining oil and clear varnish is understandable, but I advise against it because both materials work differently.

Oil penetrates the wood and remains breathable, while clear varnish creates a sealing, closed layer. If you apply oil first and then clear varnish, adhesion problems can occur. The varnish bonds less effectively with the oiled surface, which may later cause peeling.

It is better to choose one method:
- For a more natural look and flexibility: furniture oil
- For durable and water-resistant protection: clear varnish (polyurethane)

Since kitchens are frequently exposed to moisture, a water-resistant clear varnish is often more practical. Important: sand thoroughly before application and pay special attention to protecting the edges.

Additionally, I recommend not placing furniture directly next to heat sources or the sink to minimize moisture exposure.
