Hello everyone, I plan to repaint my IKEA Hemnes furniture piece – specifically a white bedside table from the series – with as little effort as possible to give it a fresh look. What I have in mind is a simple but durable and as smooth as possible finish. Less time and material effort would be great, and the method should be suitable for hobby DIYers without a professional workshop. Are there any recommendations for suitable paints, surface preparation (such as sanding or priming), and tips on how to achieve a good result without much hassle? I look forward to your advice!

If you want to use spray paint – which requires the least effort – make sure the area is well ventilated and protect adjacent surfaces.

Good addition, I often underestimate that. Spray paint is great for smooth surfaces, but it can be hard to control if you're not well prepared. It’s also important to apply several thin coats from a greater distance (about 20–30cm (8–12 inches)); otherwise, you’ll get ugly runs. And let it dry properly!

One more tip: If you don’t feel like sanding, try using a bonding primer spray specifically designed for smooth painted surfaces. It can prepare the substrate and help the paint last longer. However, sanding remains more reliable in the long run.
