Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of recycling my Ikea Brimnes furniture in an environmentally friendly way. Since these furniture pieces are mainly made of particleboard, paper surfaces, and metal parts, I am particularly interested in local or practical options for separating and sustainably disposing of or recycling these materials. I am also open to tips on whether certain steps before recycling, such as disassembling or removing screws, play an important role. Perhaps someone also knows about specific programs or providers that specialize in furniture recycling? I look forward to your experiences and expert advice, ideally with respect to regional conditions here in Germany. Thanks in advance!
Hello everyone! One point I find very important is preparation before recycling. Completely disassembling the furniture can be tedious, but it’s definitely worth it because of the material separation.
Also: If the piece of furniture is still in good condition, I recommend offering it through online platforms or local exchange groups. Flea markets are also a good option to give furniture a second life, reducing the amount that is thrown away immediately.
If you decide to recycle it, be sure to separate the materials. Metal parts should be taken to a scrap yard or metal recycling center, while particleboard usually ends up with bulky waste or general household waste. Also, be sure to remove any non-recyclable plastic films or other plastic components.

I just wanted to contribute a more positive perspective. Sure, Brimnes furniture made from particleboard often isn’t the best for recycling, but you can still get quite a bit out of it if you put in a little effort.
- As already mentioned, disassemble it and collect the metal parts separately.
- For the particleboard panels: I know a few recycling centers that at least accept them for incineration – better than sending them to a landfill!
Also, and I think this is really important: next time you buy furniture, maybe consider more environmentally friendly options or look for used furniture instead.
And hey, taking apart a piece of furniture can be a pretty satisfying DIY project. That way, you get double the fun: environmental protection and DIY vibes!
