Hello everyone, I am planning to use several Billy shelves from IKEA in my bathroom to create additional storage space. However, since the bathroom tends to be quite humid due to the bathtub and shower, I am concerned about the durability of the shelves. My main question is: How can I effectively protect Billy shelves from the typical moisture found in bathrooms? What measures and materials would you recommend to prevent the shelves from swelling or developing mold? I am considering both preventive coatings and special sealants but would appreciate practical advice and long-lasting solutions. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Hi Tumanuel, I’m familiar with BILLY shelves and bathroom humidity – I had a similar issue once. 🙂 A very important tip: applying a protective coating beforehand is invaluable, ideally a clear exterior varnish. A little secret of mine is to also lightly rub the shelves inside with colorless furniture wax – this creates a breathable protective layer.

Also, if you want to add some color, you can use a water-repellent wood stain that preserves the wood’s character while protecting against moisture. And always make sure to ventilate regularly, because no amount of sealing will prevent mold if the air doesn’t circulate properly.

A small extra tip: I set up a small space heater corner in my bathroom, which helps reduce humidity quickly – it really benefits the furniture. Good luck, you’ve got this! :-)
