Hello everyone, I have some Billy shelves from IKEA at home that have unfortunately started to wobble a bit, which is especially problematic when the shelves are loaded. I’m interested in learning about ways to make these shelves more stable without having to buy completely new furniture. Specifically, I’m looking for tips on how to effectively reinforce the simple construction, which is made of particleboard and has a cardboard backing—both to improve standing stability and to prevent wobbling when opening and closing doors or removing heavy items. Are there proven methods or tools (e.g., additional connectors, brackets, special screws, adhesives, etc.) that work well for stabilization? Also, I would like to know if securing the shelves to the wall is absolutely necessary or if there are other practical solutions. Thanks in advance!

Rubber pads on the bottom stabilize contact with the floor

That’s true, the rubber pads mainly help on uneven floors. I always add small plastic wedges behind the back—on the wall side—if the wall isn’t perfectly straight. This often eliminates rocking movement. Together with anchoring to the wall, this significantly improves stability. Otherwise, the classic advice: don’t overload, especially not at the top.
