AndreasP019 Aug 2025 18:29Hello,
after water damage, the insurance company is restoring our apartment. During the work, a few things have come up that make us uncertain.
In the bathroom, tiles were installed on a wooden ceiling. The tiler did not grout the wall tiles or the floor tiles and has already built the bathtub enclosure. Is this normal?
We suspect that this might affect both the waterproofing and the stability of the tiles under the bathtub.
Additionally, the new bathtub is installed and now needs to be grouted around. (possible damage to the new tub)
It doesn’t seem logical to me. :-(
Can a professional advise us on whether this approach is correct or advisable?
Best regards,
Andreas

Hi Andreas,
no, that is not correct practice. Joints (grout lines) are essential; otherwise, flexibility and waterproofing are compromised, especially in the bathroom. Tiles under the bathtub must also be grouted before any backfilling or embedding is done. Ask the tiler why this step was skipped. Could there have been issues with drying or time pressure from other trades?
Good luck!

AndreasP019 Aug 2025 20:31Unfortunately, he does not speak German :-(
According to the translation app, he hasn’t applied the tile adhesive yet...
There was no time pressure, he still needs to grout now—just not everywhere anymore.

Hi, the explanation regarding the missing adhesive is currently quite weak. The approach is not really understandable in terms of the final result. Are you going to contact the renovation project manager directly, or is this only being handled through the tiler on site?
Good luck!
