We are planning to use granite tiles (3cm wide (1.2 inches)) for the stairs in our new house.
We thought that rounding the edges of the stairs would be allowed. However, a friend mentioned that there are certain regulations to ensure safety against slipping.
Are these regulations also applicable to private properties?
What exactly do the regulations say regarding this?
Are granite tiles with a width of 2cm (0.8 inches) also suitable for stairs? Will they look good?
If rounding is not allowed, what types of cuts are recommended?
Thank you very much.

Annegret-17 Aug 2014 11:52Hello,
I am not familiar with the regulations, so I would need to consult an expert. However, I wouldn’t be comfortable with just 2 cm (0.8 inches) width for the stairs. I’m also not sure if you mean the 2 or 3 cm (0.8 or 1.2 inches) as the width or the thickness of the granite slabs?
Best regards

Kurt1985-129 Aug 2014 11:34We also have granite on the stairs leading down from the terrace. These are 3 cm (1¼ inches) thick and made from a single piece. The good thing is that they can be easily combined with the other material. The edges are rounded, but this is done at the factory.

bastian-115 Oct 2014 06:59I am not a fan of prefabricated granite stairs. I prefer tiles because they are easier to install than mounting prefabricated stairs. Once, a steel beam slipped from my hands onto the stairs and two tiles were damaged. I was able to replace them easily. With a prefabricated stair, that would have been a much more expensive problem.
