Hello everyone,
We still need to install a fall protection system for our L-shaped retaining wall. For now, there is a temporary wooden structure and a fence, but we would like to find a long-term solution that looks good without costing too much.
We were thinking of using a gabion placed behind the L-shaped blocks.
We planned to fill the gabions with basalt crushed stone. However, a friend mentioned that this might cause the gabions to rust.
I did some research online, and it seems that basalt, because it contains iron, can actually cause metal—even if it’s treated against rust—to corrode when in contact with it.
Does anyone here have experience with this?
Best regards,
Christoph

Claims that something is "rust-free" usually refer to the combination of metal, water, and air. Contact corrosion with other metals is rarely covered by such statements. Even "stainless steel" is not inherently resistant to rust in all situations or against everything.
A little rosemary, lemon balm, eucalyptus pressed into the gaps and a smart irrigation system from @rick2018 placed in front might then replace the sauna infusion?

Remember, by using gabions you are basically creating a summer supplementary heater in your garden

Hello, related to this topic I have a question… Does anyone know the typical price range (Bavaria) for gabion walls? We are planning a 5m x 1.80m (16 ft 5 in x 5 ft 11 in) structure filled with Jura yellow stones, with granite slabs as end caps on both sides. The neighbors behind have a sloped driveway where a lot of riding toys are used, and the distance to our living room window is only 3m (10 ft).
We have received a quote that includes laying the foundation, amounting to 3000 euros before tax.
Is this reasonable, or should we keep looking?
