I am probably planning to create a fruit and vegetable bed in my garden next year.
I have been thinking about building it as a "raised bed." This idea came partly because we have a dog that shouldn’t get into the beds, and partly to make gardening easier on the back.
Has anyone had experience with this type of bed?
I’m looking forward to many, many suggestions!

WinklWormser2 Jul 2013 12:24Hello Holzzauber,
I don’t have direct experience with a raised bed yet, but I have grown vegetables in window boxes both last year and this year. A window box is even further from a “proper” garden bed than a raised bed, but it worked and is working again.
Last year, I grew tomatoes, spring onions, and some herbs. The tomato plants didn’t grow as tall as they would in a proper bed, but they still produced some fruit. The herbs and spring onions grew normally. This year, I'm trying chilies, and so far it looks quite promising. Unfortunately, I don’t know how cucumbers, potatoes, etc. would do 😀
How do you plan to build the raised bed? If you build a sturdy wooden frame around an existing bed and fill it with soil, the plants won’t be at a disadvantage. Just make sure to use the right type of wood so it doesn’t rot quickly and you can enjoy it for several years.
Best regards,
Micha
