Hello,
we recently had discussions with the neighbors to collect signatures for the building permit / planning permission application. We are not deviating from the development plan (site plan exemption), but we still obtained the signatures because our architect recommended it. Now, during a visit where we presented the plan to the neighbors, one neighbor asked if they could have a copy of the building plan. I said I could send it to them digitally, but now I’m not sure if I should really do that. However, you also don’t want to make yourself unpopular right away. How would you handle this? Are there good reasons not to share the full plan? Maybe just send the exterior elevations without the floor layout?

I would just go and ask. I don’t really think of it as someone stealing inspiration. But everyone probably knows a story where a neighbor planning to build first asked for an approved building project and later placed tandem parking or a tower-high garbage bin shed right on the boundary, and suddenly the neighbor’s paradise was ruined.

wiltshire31 Mar 2025 20:39We showed the building plans to our future neighbors to give them peace of mind and let them know what to expect. At the same time, we asked them what was important to them, which helped create a good starting point for everyone.
What needs to be done and what can be refused are guidelines that leave plenty of room for good communication. So far, I have not had to invoke these boundaries of "they are not allowed to do this" and "I am allowed to do that" with any neighbors.

Bierwächter31 Mar 2025 23:06As mentioned, we showed them the plan calmly, and there is nothing unusual on it. They just wanted to have a copy for themselves, simply because they wanted to. Our carport will go exactly up to the property line, and the neighbors are planning a fence, which we already said would not be a problem.

They just wanted to have it for themselves as well, simply like that.
