ᐅ Fireplace Design: Cladding a Wood Storage Niche

Hello everyone,

I’m currently looking for a good idea on how to best design the niche next to our fireplace. The niche extends from floor to ceiling and is intended to be used as firewood storage up to about 1.50 meters (5 feet) in height. It fits 33 cm (13 inch) logs quite precisely. Above that, I would like to install 2 or 3 shelves, but only for decorative items.

I would like to line the lower section with something that can withstand the wear and tear from regularly placing and removing firewood over time. Although I’ve found plenty of images on Google, I haven’t really found any helpful advice when it comes to choosing the right material.

I’m also unsure about the shelves. Frosted glass feels very 1990s. As an alternative, I still have some leftover 35 mm (1 3/8 inch) acacia board, which I would cut if I can’t come up with anything better. Oiled, it also matches the parquet flooring quite well.

Currently, all three sides of the niche are fully plastered, and I’d like to keep it that way underneath. Maybe you have some ideas...

Best regards,
Markus

Try searching for flat river pebble mosaic tiles; they come in all colors. I saw them once at a client's place, where they installed untreated oak boards on top as shelves. The river pebbles are polished flat.

We used a similar style very sparingly in the guest bathroom. For the living room, it wouldn’t really suit my taste. I’m thinking of finding a metalworker who can do delicate work and have a custom powder-coated insert made. If that doesn’t work out, it will be painted for now.
