Hello everyone,

I have recently been considering using AirTags to track important valuables that I store in an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit. Specifically, I am interested in whether anyone here has experience with how reliable the tracking is inside this type of furniture.

My valuables (e.g., jewelry, important documents) are not placed openly on the shelves but kept in locked boxes or small drawers. I am wondering:

- Does the signal from the AirTags get weakened by the shelves or storage compartments within the KALLAX?
- Is the range and sensitivity sufficient to accurately determine the location if you are not standing directly next to it?
- Are there any practical tips on the best way to attach or position AirTags inside such a piece of furniture to ensure maximum reliability?

I would appreciate it if anyone could share their experiences before I invest in some unnecessarily. Thanks in advance!

Small thing: If you have a lot of metal around (candle holders, vases, etc. on the shelf), it can slightly interfere.

Good point, thanks! I actually have a few metal items on the shelves. Do you think that really affects the Bluetooth signal noticeably? Could this possibly be compensated for by positioning?

Looking forward to more tips and also to hearing how you manage the power supply for AirTags in the long term, since they use batteries.

Yes, metal reflects and dampens Bluetooth signals. This can cause signal shadowing, especially if several metal objects are close to the AirTag.

Regarding placement: if possible, you should position the AirTag so that it has line of sight or at least some "clearance" toward the receiving device – in other words, not inside a metal box or completely surrounded by metal.

About the battery: the AirTag battery usually lasts more than a year, but the device will notify you via iPhone well in advance when a replacement is needed. Changing the battery is simple and can be done with a coin.

If you plan to use multiple AirTags, it’s important to check them regularly to avoid any gaps.
