Hey,

I hope this is the right place for my topic. I just followed the "energy" tag 😉

My partner and I are currently renovating a property, and we want to focus especially on energy efficiency and related aspects. Since we plan to do a lot of the work ourselves, we are looking for suitable information sources, whether books or anything else available.

I have two questions for you: I found a technical book on energy and would like to know if anyone has read something like that and can recommend it. And secondly, what would you generally recommend for getting well informed on this topic.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Franka

The mentioned "energy manual" does not seem suitable for the topic of a very specific renovation. I would rather recommend technical construction books, which focus more on building construction, building physics, and building services engineering.

Energy-efficient renovation is a complex subject involving the legal requirements of the energy-saving ordinance, the incentive programs of KfW and BAFA, building regulations, and last but not least, the condition of the existing building structure. An energy-efficient renovation always considers the overall concept of building insulation, heating, and, if applicable, ventilation. These components must be coordinated with each other. If you want to carry out a KfW-funded measure, a building energy consultation is always required, where the existing structure is recorded in a complex calculation program and different renovation options are tested to achieve a defined energy performance result.

The existing building should not be underestimated; its condition should be recorded and assessed in as much detail as possible during a building survey to avoid surprises during the later renovation work. Building damage—mostly moisture-related—must also be identified and repaired at this stage, as only dry components can be insulated.

In most cases, the building survey also provides sufficient opportunity to align your remodeling and usage ideas with the conditions of the existing building. If you plan to carry out a large part of the renovation work yourself, it should be professionally planned in advance. Last but not least, the building survey and renovation planning establish a financial framework that you can adapt to your capabilities.

I recommend working with a specialist planner from the beginning, preferably an architect experienced with older buildings. If you want to use KfW programs, you may find suitable consultants in the dena list of "Energy Efficiency Experts."
