Hello,

I am still in the very early stages of planning my house. What dimensions should I allow for a quarter-turn staircase in the floor plan?

Thanks in advance for your help!
Best regards,

It depends on the stair width, floor height, stair slope (ratio of tread length to riser height), and ceiling constructions. Hardly anyone can give you a general answer.

For a rough estimate: One step is approximately 25–27 cm (10–11 inches) long and about 17 cm (7 inches) high.

The ideal staircase follows this formula:
2*H + 1*A = 63 cm (25 inches)
where H is the riser height and A is the tread depth. The 63 cm (25 inches) represents the optimal stride length to aim for.

According to our Austrian building regulations, a step should not be higher than 20 cm (8 inches) or shorter than 25 cm (10 inches). I wouldn’t recommend anything different either.

It’s best to visit a staircase supplier, try going up and down various stairs, and note the dimensions of the staircase that feels most comfortable to you. Using the given 63 cm (25 inches) formula, you can calculate a suitable staircase.
