strebermeister3 Mar 2025 20:11Hello everyone,
In our house (built in 1965), there are settlement cracks visible in the sand-lime mortar plaster, measuring about 1 mm (0.04 inches) wide. The exterior walls are covered with brick cladding, and no cracks can be seen from outside. The wall with the large crack was recently ground down to remove old styrofoam adhesive. For many years, there had been a styrofoam insulation layer about 1 cm (0.4 inches) thick applied there. The crack only became visible after removing this layer. The ground on the property is rather sandy, and we suspect that the cracks have been there for a long time, likely arising shortly after construction due to settlement. However, I am uncertain about whether such cracks require treatment or if they are relatively harmless.
Best regards,
Andreas
