ᐅ Complete Bathroom Renovation After 25 Years: How to Plan?

Good day!

The bathroom is the most heavily used room in our home. After about 25 years, a complete renovation is necessary. Despite regular dry wiping, the grout has been a persistent issue. The silicone sealants have been replaced every few years, but now even the hard grout is deteriorating. Besides that, the late 1990s style is no longer what we want today.

How would you approach the planning? It’s not just about technical matters but especially about design considerations. We recently visited a bathroom showroom at a large supplier nearby. Of course, their focus is mainly on bathtubs, showers, toilets, and washbasins. The staff there said that the plumber would take measurements, then she would transfer those to a 3D drawing and plan the bathroom. She was very surprised that I found this approach too technical. I actually need someone who comes to our home to get a feel for us, the house, and the room. I could literally see the lack of understanding on her face when I said I wanted to talk mainly about surfaces—ideally seamless surfaces—to minimize maintenance units, especially in the wet areas.

How should one approach something like this? For example, are there freelance interior designers in Berlin who specialize in bathroom design? I don’t mean a “bath planner” based in a large supplier’s showroom who creates 3D sketches. That could be the next step, but at first, I need someone on site.

It’s also a question of how much of the existing structure should be removed—whether, for example, the screed should be taken out, and so on.

In the end, I want to find the right tradespeople to carry out the work, from installation to applying the surfaces.

Matthias welcomes all good ideas on how to proceed!

My impression is that the answers somewhat miss the original poster’s problem. I understand it as the OP actually looking for someone who can create a coherent atmosphere for the bathroom.

Our bathroom, for example, became highly functional thanks to the bathroom planners, but somewhat boring. Neither the plumber, tiler, nor bathroom showroom had expertise in creating a stylish design.
And it seems the OP is looking for an expert who specializes in bathroom design, including color schemes, etc.

However, this also assumes that the OP has an appropriate budget for it. If the OP does not even know which tasks need to be done (screed), I would not be so confident that the renovation costs have been accurately estimated.

Exactly! First, the design-related questions need to be clarified, then the technical implementation follows. Of course, it’s beneficial to keep good technical feasibility and durability in mind during the design phase. But for such a concept, I need creative support, which I won’t get from a plumbing company or a 3D bathroom planner at a wholesaler’s showroom. I don’t want to undervalue their capabilities, but that is the next step. And I stand by this: without an on-site impression, nothing works.

The room is approximately 15 square meters (160 square feet). Since the bathroom is used intensively and is particularly exposed due to the wet room conditions, I am willing to spend a bit more. I see 25,000 EUR as a minimum, but if there are good reasons to invest more, that is acceptable.

First, you need to clarify the design-related questions.

You should start by looking at plenty of pictures of bathrooms. It takes some time for your eye and taste to develop for “bathroom” design. Otherwise, you can hire an interior designer. They are familiar with color and proportions. Ideally, they also know about tiles and craftsmanship. If not, you take their advice and then go to the tile store.

Interior designers are especially helpful if you already have some ideas to give them. Otherwise, they tend to stay within mediocre “market-friendly” tastes. That can be pleasing, but not very exciting—and often unfortunately not timeless.

25k could be very tight for that size. It might work with standard fixtures, but definitely not if you want extravagant furniture or a special floor. So before you commit to a particular design, it might be wiser to first check what a basic, standard bathroom costs. After that, some specific wishes will likely resolve themselves ;-)

However, when renovating, the feasibility of technical implementation should already be taken into account during the design planning.
