Hello everyone,
we had a steel stringer staircase installed and were satisfied until now. However, when the temporary steps were replaced with the final ones, there is now a 2 cm (0.8 inch) gap on each side.

It looks really bad, and everyone who has seen it so far agrees.

The stair builder says this is normal and actually makes cleaning easier. He also said that this complies with the DIN standard and that he doesn’t care if anyone dislikes it.

I couldn’t find any information online about a DIN standard regarding the gap between the (steel) stringer and the step.

Can someone tell me if there are any regulations about the maximum allowed gap size?
Thanks in advance!

As long as you have nothing in writing, you can only hope for goodwill... Expectations won’t matter to anyone afterward...

Good evening,

the DIN standard refers to the rise and going of the steps. Certainly not to the width of individual steps; the stair builder is talking nonsense.

Refuse acceptance "in writing" with reference to the sample according to the graphic and construction stages, and then have him come. For me, the steps are too narrow or the stringers are set too far apart.

OT: May I ask how large the staircase is and what it cost?

I also think the steps should be flush, especially for cleaning purposes! I would also raise a complaint and refer to the diagram.

I wanted to revive this thread. Can anyone share how much their steel stringer staircase with wooden treads cost per floor? We would also like to have one but are not sure if it fits into our budget. I requested two quotes based on the floor plan for a rough planning, but no one has responded for a week... 🙁
