Hello,

our house is almost completely clad with facing bricks but not yet pointed.
I have noticed that some vertical joints are completely or partially without mortar.
Is this acceptable, or should these areas be repaired before pointing?

Thank you very much for your advice...

This sounds like drainage and ventilation openings in cavity walls according to DIN 1053-1.

Hello Otus,
The wall structure consists of calcium silicate brick, mineral wool insulation, and facing brick.
There are no drainage or ventilation openings; it is just carelessness on the part of the bricklayer.
The question is whether he needs to redo the work or leave the joint filling to the professional jointer.
My concern is that the jointer might also just quickly smear mortar into the joint, resulting in insufficient material to make the joint properly sealed for the coming years.

I don't like "some" and "partially without," otherwise I would have also considered standard ventilation joints. A picture is worth a thousand words.

"Klinkerer and Verfuger" sounds very much like a division of labor among inexperienced workers – the percentage of qualified professionals on construction sites is often surprisingly low. Your text suggests that this finishing is supposed to follow with intervals measured in more than just hours; to me, it looks like sloppy patching, meaning someone is superficially fixing the appearance on mortar that has long since set. Well then, good luck!

In my mind’s eye, I see someone pushing joint mortar like a snowplow, smearing the whole wall :-(

Before more people start sharing their vivid imaginations here, you should attach photos of the joints in this thread.

The butt joints in the facing brickwork must be filled with mortar according to DIN EN 1996-2. Of course, drainage openings, for example in the base area, are exempt from this requirement.

Incidentally, this standard also recommends using a joint raking method (instead of later repointing). I honestly don’t understand why quite a few homeowners have their facing bricks repointed afterward. At the very least, you should now insist on professional execution: the mortar joints must be raked out to a depth of at least 15 cm (6 inches) before repointing...
